Odia is a dialect-rich language and has many different dialects spoken across different cities, towns, and regions in the state. Apart from Indian cities and states, since Odia people are spread across various parts of the world, Odia is spoken in many other countries like Canada, England, Australia, United States, Malaysia, Gulf countries, and in fact, the diaspora is spread up to far Pacific islands such as Fiji as well. Again, if you look at different cities with Odia speakers, you’d find a considerable number of Odia speakers in cities like Hyderabad, Mumbai, Goa, Jamshedpur, Pondicherry, New Delhi, Guwahati, Pune, and many nearby as well as far ones. Odia has got a striking resemblance to Bengali, although the language is officially recognized as a different language altogether.īesides, the 4 neighboring Indian states, Odia, to some extent, is also spoken in Bangladesh. However, it isn’t limited to Odisha and extends to other neighboring states such as West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and even some parts of the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. Odia is the native language of over 80% of the population of Odia. Oriya, now known as Odia is an Indian language spoken in the eastern Indian state of Odisha.
